EDGE*nyNOHO

Posted by cher on August 10th, 2007

According to the website, “EDGE*nyNOHO is a unique venture developed to promote designs and concepts by fresh, cutting edge talent. A design mecca with the most innovative ideas to come out of New York, it is “THE” destination for individuals seeking creativity, individuality and exclusivity.”

It’s like a mini department store, with 65 designers all under one roof, where you can move easily from one to the next. Small cutout spaces in the walls provide designers with enough room for a stool and some racks or display units for the merchandise. The center of the store is filled with glass cases, showcasing the talents of the jewelry designers. One thing that I love about Edge – the designers just don’t hand over their products to the owner and peace out. They are there every day, personally selling their designs.

These up-and-coming designers have been featured in a plethora of magazines and reviews. One of my favorites there – Lois Eastlund – had one of her dresses featured on American Idol. Go to Edge if you’re tired of the same old namebrands – or if you were never into them to begin with. Since there’s so many designers in one space, prices range all over the board; some dresses are well into the hundreds of dollars, while one designer has gorgeous rings for $20. Every designer takes different methods of payment, so bring some options!

Check out their website for a full list of designers, store location, and hours.

Dashing Diva

Posted by cher on August 2nd, 2007

As a tribute to all things chic and entertaining that I find in the city, I will be posting a weekly article called – you guessed it – “These are a few of my favorite things.”

This week I found a new, fabulous place to spend all my money that I don’t have. Girly-girls will love it, guys probably won’t step a foot into the building, let alone sit in the (pink upholstered) waiting chairs. It’s a pink paradise of a nail salon called Dashing Diva. They offer a basic Diva Manicure, Eyelash Extensions, and everything in between. There’s different levels of manis and pedis to choose from, as well as new forms of nail tips (say goodbye to acrylics, ladies). For NYC, the prices are not unreasonable at all. A Diva Manicure will only set you back $15; my new Virtual Nail set with a french manicure was only $40. You can have parties and ladies’ nights out there and enjoy their version of a cosmo on Friday evenings. Love it! Check out all of their locations and services here.

I wore a fanny pack to Disney World in 1994

Posted by cher on July 4th, 2007

I’ve decided that a fanny pack is the ultimate give-away that you’re a tourist. It totally beats out having a camera around your neck or a map in your hand.

It’s too bad that fanny packs are so gauche, because they really are convenient. Nothing to schlep around on your shoulder or accidentally leave behind. It provides a sort of comfort, knowing you won’t get pick-pocketed. (Cause really, who’s gonna be able to run up to your stomach, manage to open a zipper and fish out money without you noticing?)

I’m personally routing for the return of the fanny pack. Obviously, it needs some updating; change the shape, use some nice leather and fabrics, maybe stick a designer label on it (people would buy Chanel dog food if they made it) – it totally has the potential to look cool. It’ll need a new name too, of course, because there’s way too much stigma attached to the word “fanny pack“. I would definitely rock a “belt bag”.

Let’s face it – fashion is all about stealing looks from other decades and slightly updating them. Let’s do the 90′s (and tourists stuck in the 90′s) a favor and bring back the pack!
